At around noon on Friday afternoon, DC Fire and EMS personnel were called to the 4000 block of Benning Road NE, where a blaze broke out inside a two-story home.
A second alarm was quickly called as the flames continued to spread while smoke billowed through the air that could be seen for several blocks in the area.
Officials said that the second home the fire spread to was a vacant dwelling at the time. In total, approximately 100 firefighters were called to the scene to get the fire under control.
The cause and origin of the fire are now under investigation.
No injuries were initially reported, though one lucky turtle and a ferret were both safely removed from harm. Four adults and four children have been displaced.
